Horned Grebes

Our frozen sloughs have once again been replaced with the sights and sounds of spring and the return of some of our 'wetland' characters!  Meet the Grebes ... in this case the Horned Grebes (Podiceps auritus)!  Sporting their 'breeding plumage,' ... the golden ear tufts ... aka  'horns,' we have quite a few pairs swimming and diving in our shallow sloughs these days. Last year, I was fortunate enough to see and capture a pair enthralled in their mating dance (The Grebe Dance, April 2011).  With any luck, perhaps I'll get that same opportunity again!
